ST. JOHN AFFAIRS

SERVICE AWARDS

DISCUSSED BY OFFICERS

Local and visiting officers of the Order of St. John from all over New Zealand met this morning to discuss matters of general interest, as part of the golden jubilee celebations of the order in Auckland. The commissioner of the Auckland district, Mr. D. F. Mackay, presided, and those present met the commandery secretary, Mr. Keith A. Falconer.

It was decided that representations be made requesting that service awards be issued by the commandery in New Zealand instead of by the world headquarters, St. John's Gate, London, as is the case at present. It was pointed out that although the New Zealand Order was controlled from London, more and more matters were being decided in New Zealand, such as supplies of uniforms and text books. As the issue of service awards from London involved a delay of from 18 months to two years, it was hoped the awards could be made by the New Zealand commandery.

Particular reference was made to the development -of cadet work, and cadet officers had the opportunity of a conference with the Dominion cadet officer, Mr. Gerald Ferguson, of Dunedin. Other matters discussed included uniforms, rank badges, service chevrons and medallions. Visiting officers spoke of the need for uniformity, and welcomed the publication by the commandery of a booklet incorporating dress regulations and other matters of administration.

Regret was expressed at the absence through illness of the commandery commissioner, Colonel G. Barclay.

This afternoon, a brigade inspection at Blandford Park was taken by his Excellency, the GovernorGeneral.. Sir Cyril Newall, and the Knight Commander of the Order of St. John in New Zealand, Sir Heaton Rhodes.

To-morrow the Governor-General will hold an investiture service in St. Mary's. Cathedral.
