RESULTS OF CONTROL
The letter appearing in this column on Wednesday signed "Some of the Housewives," referring to'the offer of a farmer of his kumaras to a neighbouring camp and subsequently sold in other quarters by the Internal Marketing Division, was referred to that division, with the following result:—The Internal Marketing Department knows nothing of the transaction. The Department of Agriculture handles all sup< ply of vegetables for the New Zealand Army; the Joint Purchasing Board handles produce similarly for our allies. The Department of Agriculture purchases for supply to the army only those vegetables which it cannot supply from its own farm projects and which are required by the army. Kumaras are not on the schedule, and have not been purchased recently. There have been some offers of vegetable supply from the district concerned, which were not accepted because the Department could supply all requirements from its own projects, and because further purchase from outside sources would react unfavourably on the civilian market. Nothing is known of the particular transaction referred to in the letter.—Ed.
