FRIENDSHIP APPRECIATED
NEW ZEALAND AND GREECE
Writing to the New Zealasd Legation in Washington in appreciation of a sub-leader in the Auckland Star on the cordiality of our feelings towards Greece and expressing the hope that one of the first food ships to that stricken country after peace is declared should be provided by this Dominion, Mr. George Haniotis, Director of the Greek Office of Information in America, says: "I was in Greece during the war, and I escaped to Egypt just a few days before the German Army entered Athens. In Egypt I have seen many New Zealanders who escaped from Greece after the occupation. What the Auckland Star writes is what I have heard often from all the New Zealanders I have met in Egypt, and I wish to convey to you how much the Greek people appreciate the friendship of the gallant New Zealanders. I have never had a more pleasant duty than to cable the article of the Auckland Star to Cairo to be reproduced in the Greek papers in Egypt and possibly broadcast to the people of Greece; I have already sent it to the Greek language newspapers in America, and I am making a general release for the American Press, calling attention to the real friendship existing already between some of the United Nations."
