ESSENTIAL WORK

A couple of articles have recently been published by "Marcus Mule" championing the rights of "seagulls" on the waterfront, and demanding that the union has need of their experienced men. If "Marcus Mule" has made such an intense study of conditions on the wharves, surely he is cognisant of the fact that wharf work is not essential, and that union members are being drafted into the army and other essential works. If these experienced imion members can be transferred to other essential works, surely it is ridiculous for casual workers, i.e., "seagulls" to be clamouring for admittance to the union. Surely it would be more fitting if they took up some permanent essential work themselves instead of being content to wait around, classed as unemployed, and wasting a good percentage of their time waiting for wharf work when other essential works are begging for men. ESSENTIAL WORKER.
