SOLD SLY GROG

A WIDOW FIXED £40

Appearing on summons in the Police Court this morning, a woman, Ina Josephine Phillips, was fined £40 on a charge of selling liquor without a license on January 16. Mr. F. Haigh represented defendant, who pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant Harley said that on the night of January 16 a plain clothes constable arrived outside a house in Pitt Street in a taxi. He knocked on the door, which was opened by the defendant, and the constable asked her if there was any chance of his buying £1 worth of beer. He was invited inside, where he saw some cartons of beer. Defendant sold him eight large bottles. Later when the premises were raided by a sergeant, 165 large bottles of beer and 21 bottles of wine were seized. Mr. Harley added that defendant on January 22 was fined £40 on a charge of being privy to the sale of liquor. ? Mr. Haigh stated that Mrs. Phillips was a widow with two young children whom she had to support. Formerly she had an apartment house, but had since disposed of this and was now living with her mother who required attention. Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., said that as the present offence had not been committed after the offence for which she was dealt with on January 22, he would not send her to prison. The magistrate imposed a fine of £40 and, made an order that, the liquor seized should be forfeited.
