FOUND IN A CAVE

ARREST OF YOUNG MAN ALLEGED ARMY DESERTER (0.C.) WHANGAREI, this day. Alleged to be a military deserter, a young man who has been living in a cave on a remote part of the Northland coast, was arrested by the Whangsrei police yesterday. A clue received by the Whangarei police led Constable Noel Smith on a search of the Hore Hore area, lying between Patua and Ngunguru. Traversing bush and mountainous country, he eventually found tracks which led him to a sea coast cave. When accosted the young man was preparing a flatfish spear. The cave apparently had been inhabited for a lengthy period. It was well furnished and stocked with edibles. The young man has been handed over to the military authorities.
