SAFE-BREAKERS FAIL

FIRE CAUSED IN BUILDING

An automatic sprinkler prevented a fire last night in the Durham Street warehouse of Sargood, Son and Ewen. The outbreak started when-a charge placed in the brick wall containing the safe by an intruder or intruders set some paper alight. An automatic alarm summoned the fire brigade and ■ little damage was done. The thieves apparently attempted to break into the safe from the front, and as this was unsuccessful a second charge was placed in the wall at the back of the safe. The wall was slightly damaged by the explosion, but the safe was wnharmed. No one was found in the building.
