SOLD SLY GROG

CHINESE SENT TO GAOL

Found guilty of selling liquor without a license on December 29, a Chinese fruiterer, Doong Lun Wong, was sentenced to 21 days' imprisonment by Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., in the Police Court to-day. Mr. J. Terry represented Wong, who pleaded not guilty. A Maori said in evidence that he went to Wpng's shop about 2.30 a.m. on December 29 and was admitted by the defendant. Witness said .he asked for "a quid's worth of beer," and was given eight large bottles, for which he paid defendant £1. Later witness was accosted by a constable, who returned to the shop with him. Witness identified defendant as the person who had sold him the liquor. Two sergeants said they searched the shop and found some beer, 39 bottles of wine and two bottles of brandy. Wong denied that he sold beer to the Maori, whom he said had not been in his shop. The magistrate, in imposing sentence, said he was satisfied that Wong had sold the liquor.
