Targets For German Raiders In England CHILDREN ESCAPE INJURY Rec. 11 a.m. LONDON, Feb. 9. A raider over a south-east of England village made a direct hit from a low level on a school, which would have been occupied by about 250 children half an hour later. In another town in south England children on their way to school narrowly escaped when a raider swooped low and dropped several bombs. Some persons were killed and others injured. An empty infants' school at a town on the south coast was also bombed. , , , A single raider bombed and machine-gunned from house-top level the streets of an outer London residential area. , . London had a brief alert this morning, when German fighter-bombers crossed the south coast, and, taking advantage of cloud cover, appeared to be heading for the capital. None of the raiders, however, appeared over London. „ ... . It is officially stated, says British Official Wireless, that an enemy aircraft was destroyed during some slight activity off the south-east coast of England in the early part of last night. There were no reports of any bombs having been dropped during the night. London had a brief air raid warning shortly after the blackout ended this morning, but no planes or gunfire were heard.
