John William Shaw McArthur, formerly of Auckland, New Zealand! stated in the Bankruptcy Court that a debt of £137 due to the Crown Law Office represented the cost of extradition to New Zealand. He had been fined £500 and had paid the fine, he said. "The destruction by Act of Parliament of the businesses I have been engaged in and the taking away of my livelihood are the causes of my bankruptcy," said McArthur. There had been 14 different Acts of Parliament passed in connection with his businesses during the last six years he said. McArthur, whose estate was sequestrated on November 26, 1942 on the petition of the Commissioner of Taxation, was examined by Mr A. V. Richardson (Official Receiver)' He said his wife was getting money from her friends to finance her into a small cafe business and their present living expenses were covered by that money. ■ Their furnished flat at Potts Point cost £4 10/ a week. "The Allied Works Council offered me an office boy's job and one with a spade. I could not do either. If I am given a fair run I can pay my creditors easily," said McArthur. "My Australian business was confiscated by the N.S.W. Government because it was becoming a powerful competitor of the operations of the Stevens Government." McArthur;.' said the companies he had been interested in included South British National Trust, Ltd., Agency, Investors' Development Corporation New Zealand and British Home Supplies. McArthur's statement of affairs showed unsecured creditors at £1993 14/7,, and assets nil.
