FIRE AT MARKETS
i VALUE OF PRIVATE HOSES The value of fire hoses installed in city buildings was shown this morning when a fire occurred in a lunch room on the premises of J. Jones, Limited, general auctioneers and merchants, at the city markets. The outbreak was in a bag of rubbish lying in a corner, and the flames spread to the wall and ceiling. It was discovered by a director of the firm who gave the alarm. Within two minutes a hose, installed on the same floor, was brought into play, and the fire was well under control when the brigade arrived. Damage was done to wallboards and ceiling. Had there been no' immediate supply of water it is believed that consequences would have been more serious, as by the time the fire brigade arrived, the timber, which was extremely dry, would have been well alight, and produce stored nearby might have suffered.
