MISCHIEF AND THEFT
i YOUNG MAORI SENTENCED A Maori, Gerald Hiku, a labourer, aged 18, was brought before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday on charges of wilfullv damaging two gas meters to the extent of 10/6, thereby committing mischief, and on the same date, January 27, with stealing £1,14/1, the property of the Auckland Gas Company He pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant Trethewey said Hiku had a room in an apartment house. After breaking open two gas meters he stole the contents. Although he had been earning good wages, Hiku was short of money at the time he committed the offences. He had never been in trouble previously. ; a t On the first charge the magistrate sentenced Hiku to six weeks imprisonment, and on the second-he admitted him to probation for two years.
