OBITUARY
MR. JOHN GEORGE The death has occurred of an early resident of Onehunga, Mr. John George, at the age of 97. The funeral took place at the Church of England cemetery, Onehunga. Mr. George's parents arrived in New Zealand in 1842 on the ship Louisa Campbell, and Mr. George was born in the only dwelling in Wyndham Street at the time. During the Maori war he served as chief officer on the Government steamer Sturt, which was engaged in carrying troops and supplies. After opening the first bonded store in Auckland, and, later, an hotel in Shortland Street, Mr. George's father moved to Onehunga. His mother founded the Onehunga Ladies' Benevolent Society to help the homeless during the Maori war in 1563. Mr. George settled in Onehunga and married Miss Lily Grimly in October, 1872. Mr. George is survived by four sons, three daughters, six grandchildren and three great-grand-children.
