BROUGHTON THE JOCKEY Lou Rosa, favourite for the Wellington Cup, was taken down to Trentham on Monday, and W. Broughton is to ride the son of Foxbridge and Lucy Rose in the two mile event. As far as condition is concerned, Lou Rosa has never been better, and came through his racing at Ellerslie in great order. The top weight, Royal Lancer, has been winning consistently, but will have to improve in order to give Lou Rosa weight and a beating next Saturday. STILL AT ELLERSLIE The four-year-old gelding Dart Gold' was not taken to Trentham by E. Keesing, and will remain at Ellerslie for the midsummer meeting to be held on January 30. D. J. Arnott Is looking after the son of Gold Dart during the absence of E. Keesing. SIGNS OP SORENESS Madame Rachel, which has been sore for some time past, was heavily bandaged when she went out to run a mile on the plough at Trentham on Tuesday. She ran the first five furlongs in 1.4 and the full distance in 1.44 2-5, the last half-mile in 53 l-3s. HAS BRIGHT PROSPECTS Bright Fox was not raced at the Auckland meeting, but has been taken to Trentham and will contest the Ruapehu Handicap next Saturday. This three-year-old has previously won over seven furlongs, and his track efforts suggest that he is likely to earn some money at the southern meeting. FAILURE PROVES COSTLY The failure of Kraal in the Goodwood Handicap on the final day at Ellerslie proved very costly to the supporters of the chestnut mare. She had every chance but faded out when the real test came. Last season Kraal failed on numerous occasions. It will be interesting to see if she can make amends when given the opportunity. WAS WORKING WELL Few horses racing at Ellerslie had been galloping better than Cherry's Ticket prior to the holiday. However, in the three races that she contested her form hardly reached the standard expected. In each event she failed tp reveal the early speed shown on previous occasions, and that made her chance of Winning more difficult, for she was meeting strong opposition. TRENTHAM RIDERS Riding engagements announced to date for the Wellington meeting are:—A. C. Bowry. Gunyah; R. Hawes, Straight Left; R. J. Auckram, Makaroa. Manutere; E. J. Lewis, Daljarrock; N. Vaughan, Broadcaster; V. Sellars, Lady Nahleen; P. Brady, Madame Rachel; J. Garth, Tavern Light, Screen; P. Burgess, Moutoa Bond; L. H.. Clifford, Duncannon, Duncroon, Bright Gesture. ESCAPED INJURY Though it was at first thought that W. E: Carter had sustained an injury to his hip when his mount fell in the last race at Ellerslie on Saturday, examination at the Auckland Hospital disclosed nothing more serious than a couple of bruises. Carter, who is apprenticed to H. Dulieu at New Plymouth, will be riding at Trentham on Saturday, where three of his mounts are Indian Princess, Celebrity and Sunlore. DOURO CUP CANDIDATE Since his success in the Grey Handicap (first division) on the final day at Ellerslie, the three-year-did Kiatere Maati has, gone on the right way. He is due to make his next appearance in the Douro Cup, to be i-un at Trentham next Saturday week. This event is usually contested by some of the best hacks in commission, but they will need to be above the average in order to beat Kiatere Maati. He will leave - for Trentham early next week.
