SUMMER SEASON

15 BOWLS CLUBS OPENED GREY LYNN WINS THE BADGES

(By TRUNDLEK)

Perfect spring weather favoured the official opening of fifteen bowling clubs last Saturday, this doubtless largely causing the exceptionally heavy attendance at the various greens. On the coming Saturday thirteen more clubs will get under way.

Naturally most attention was given to the Carlton ceremony, as the club was celebrating the opening of Its Jubilee season.

The last of the lnter-club challenge matches were played last Saturday, when Grey Lynn won the Diggers' Badges from the Ellerslie team, which had taken these popular trophies from Te Papapa three weeks earlier.

Another Grey Lynn team, after holding the Edwin Stars for a month, lost them to a Stanley team. The Diggers' game was a runaway for the visitors, who reached 20 to 3 by the tea adjournment, so the contest was not of much interest to either side. Final scores: A. Monks, R. Teague, J. C. Preston, R. C. Caddy (Grey Lynn) challengers 22, v. J. O'Keefe, J. J. Toy, L. Corby, E. J. Mitchell (Ellerslie) 16.

Looking up the records, it seems that Caddy, with a different team, had similarly won these trophies on the last playing Saturday in 1940, and then opened the next season with seven wins on end.

The other game on Saturday was well contested. The Grey Lynn holders were certainly 6 up when they adjourned for tea, but the visitors gradually overhauled them and passed them for the first time on the eighteenth end. The nineteenth really settled it. Buckley had been playing an excellent game, but he had the misfortune to give away the shot with an unlucky trail. This permitted the invaders to notch four, and a single to each side on the next two heads gave the visitors a comfortable win. Scores: T. Bold. A. Cailon, W. G. Gale, A. Hitchen (Stanley) challengers 19, v. T. W. Mayson, W. E. Mincham, E. E. Buckley, H. Whittle (Grey Lynn) 14.
