MAIZE PRODUCTION
GROWERS' SPECIAL EFFORT NO CHANGE IN PRICES 'P.A.) WELLINGTON, this day. The increasing demand for maize for poultry and pig farmers and the manufacture of starch and cornflour made it necessary that 10,000 acres be planted this year, the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Barclay, said to-day. A recent survey of the position in production centres indicated that, despite the labour shortage and other difficulties, growers were making a special effort to reach the minimum acreage required. The Minister added that prices for the crop would be the same as those paid last year— 5/6 a bushel for July delivery, rising by regular increments to 6/2 for March to June deliveries, these Prices being sacks in on trucks or f.o.b. and subject to merchants' commission of 5 per cent.
