RUGBY LEAGUE
"Near Misses."—The combination of MaristNorth Shore went close to bringing off a surprise against the present grade leader, City-Otahuhu. Throughout the game, the Marist backs controlled the play, and with a little luck two tries may have been scored. On one occasion Costello, the five-eighth, completely pierced the defence, but the bounce from his short punt, well directed for the goal mouth, just beat him. McWilliams, after a spirited dash for thirty yards, was pushed into the corner flag on another occasion. The Maoist-Shore backs are improving in their team work. City-Otahuhu form was disappointing, and had it not been for the clever play of Hutchinson at half-back, and Mullins and Donovan, fiveeighths, anything might have happened.
