FEW TRAVELLERS

BY RAILWAYS AND ROAD

With the elimination of holidav train services and all except the minimum of essential road services, Christmas Eve activity was notably lacking at the Auckland railway station and the municipal transport terminal to-day. It was stated that the Railway Department was adhering strictly to its new regulation against booking seats for distances of under 100 miles and was issuing tickets for longer distances only to those on essential journeys. People were being urged to travel by early morning trains as much as possible to relieve the demand onexpress accommodation.

Curtailment of the operations of the Railway Department's road services has made necessary the cancellation of hundreds of bookings in the past week, it was stated, and on the route from Auckland to Gisborne and Napier lhe accommodation is being held for people travelling beyond Rotorua. All sightseeing services have been cancelled. An official said that until a fortnight ago the indications pointed to a record number of travellers this Christmas.
