TIMBER FROM CROWN" LAND (0.C.) tVHAXGAREI, this day. Believ;ng That a kauri tree was on property belonging to his father; Y\ iliiam Mervyn Reed cut it down and sent the timber, as well as % quantity of fallen timber, to a mill. The timber, however, was on Crown land, and this resulted in Reed and his father. William Henry Reed, being charged jointly in the Whangarei Court to-dav.

The charge was that in April, at Puhipuhi. without right, title or license, they removed from Crown land green kauri, milling timber measuring super feet, valued at £33 2/6. and dry log milling timber measuring 4000 super feet, valued at £14, a total measurement of 10,628 and a total value of £47 2/6. the property of the Commissioner of Crown Lands.

After hearing evidence the magistrate, Mr. Raymond Ferner. said that he had no hesitation in dismissing the case against Reed senior, while in the case of Reed junior he was of the opinion that there was no element of crime. Therefore, he was prepared to dismiss it upon payment of royalty of £36 2 0 and prosecutiom costs of 13/.
