PLEDGE RESPECTED

LONDON, Aug. 15.

A message has been sent to General de Gaulle by Mr. Oliver Lyttelton, Minister of State in the Middle East, stating that he was happy to repeat that Britain had no interests in Syria or Lebanon except to win the war without encroaching on the position of France. "Both pledge the independence of Syria and Lebanon," he said. "We admit that France should have a predominant position in Syria and Lebanon."

General de Gaulle replied expressing his happiness at the renewed assurances. "Free France, that is, France, is resolved to pursue the war by the side of Britain until victory'against the common enemy is assured."
