Singapore Is Australia's Front Line U.P.A. and Britisli Wireless. Rec. 2 p.m. LONDON, Aug. 15. The largest convoy in history is reported to have arrived at Singapore, carrying thousands of troops, representing infantry, artillery, service corps, engineers and ambulance units. There were also Bren gun carriers, anti-tank guns and motor transport.

Informed quarters in Singapore comment that these men are a token of Australia's determination to treat Singapore as the first line of defence, and a warning that Britain and Australia, with their allies in the Pacific, are committed to an . inflexible policy of resisting any attempt on the part of any Power to interfere with the freedom of the peoples living in this area.

The Central News Agency, Chungking, reports that the Chinese have captured Hsiaoyi. Shansi Province, which has been held by the Japanese for three years and a half. Hsiaoyi is on the Tungpu railway, about 70 miles south-west of Taiyuan.

A Shanghai message states that Chinese gunmen assassinated Kennson Gee, manager of the Hochung Bank, when he was entering the American Club. In the ensuing battle with police one passer-by was killed and six were wounded. Five assassins, who are partisans of the Nanking regime, were captured. Mr. Gee favoured the Nanking regime.
