BREACH OF FAITH

VICHY IN SYRIA

British General Complains Of

Official Action

United Association. —Copy rig-tit

Rec. 2 p.m

CAIRO, Aug. 11

General Sir H. Maitland-Wilson has vigorously protested against three breaches of the Syrian Armistice Convention.

Firstly, that General Dentz. the former Yichv Commissioner in Syria, has denounced as deserters French soldiers who decided to join the Free French forces.

Secondly, that Vichy officials have summarily removed to an embarkation port the families and baggage of many awaiting a chance to join.

Thirdly, that the Vichy authorities sold a considerable quantity of war materials to civilians after the convention was signed.

These breaches are distinct from the bad faith for which General Dentz was detained. There are also numerous instances of obstruction. Gendarmes have arrested 50 Vichy soldiers at Tripoli, the Syrian port, who are intending to join the Allies.

The Allies were compelled to arrest these gendarmes and liberate the soldiers.
