COWARDLY ASSAULT
JOCKEY SENT TO GAOL
WOMAN' STRUCK IN' FACE (0.C.) TAURAXGA, this day. For what was described as a cowardly assault, a jockey. Thomas Donald Ferguson (l(i>, of Manunui. was sentenced to two months' imprisonment by Messrs. J. Law and E. T. Baker. j.P.'s, in the Tauranga Police Court. The assault occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning following a dance, when Ferguson, who had attended, a party which Sergeant Austin stated was really a drunken brawl, made an improper suggestion to a young woman, who was naturally incensed. Ferguson then said: "Well, if you won't go my way you can go this way," immediately striking her on the face. One of her eyes was split and her cheek was bruised. The police were called, but accused at first denied the charge.
Sergeant Austin added that accused had been before the Hamilton Court in January for resisting the police and wilful trespass. The circumstances on that occasion were similar to those of the present case.
