VETERAN'S DEATH.
MR. HUGH PATIENCE.
a veteran of the disastrous Majuba Hill engagement in Natal in 1881, Mr. Hugh Patience, died at the Auckland Infirmary on Saturday afternoon. Born in Scotland over 85 years ago, Mr. Patience joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders as a young man and served in India until 1880. Svhile they were returning to England, the first South African War broke out and Mr. Patience, among others, was drafted into a composite battalion with the Gordon Highlanders. This company was among the 600 who were overwhelmed and defeated with heavy losses by the Boere under Piet Joubert at Majuba Hill.
After buying his discharge, Mr. Patience emigrated to Australia and later came to New Zealand, where, during the war, he served as a staffsergeant instructor at Auckland. After his wife and children died, Mr. Patience entered the Veterans' Home at Mount Roskill. He was of late years the recognised standard-bearer of the Mount Albert Caledonian Society and previously was associated with the Papatoetoe Town Band.
