TAXI FARES UP.
HALF MILE SIXPE^
NEW SCHEDULE NEXT MONTH
CONFIRMED BY AUTHORITY.
The recently approved schedule of taxi fares was confirmed by the Auckland Transport Board, meeting as the Metropolitan Licensing Authority, to-day, and the new rates will operate earlv in August. The principal charge is that after the initial l/(! at flagfall for the first mile, the rate will be bd for every half-mile instead of 6d for each additional mile.
The new schedule also does away with the boundary system, under which a driver was formerly entitled to charge from certain boundaries when travelling to or from fares in outside aieas.
A taxi driver appeared before the board to make representations on some aspects of the new schedule, particularly that of the deletion of boiuidaries. He pointed out that it was possible that a driver would now have to travel to Otahuhu for a fare, which might be worth no more than 1/0, and then be dismissed, with the prospect of an uneconomic run back to town aaain. The chairman, Mr. W. H. Xasle pointed out that the remedy for this lay with the taxi proprietors' associations. Replying to other matters raised the chairman said that the City Council and the Authority would see that the regulations were enforced, particularly in relation to hours.
