MR. W. H. GUTHRIE-SMITH.
Well known throughout New Zealand : as a naturalist, author and sheepbreeder, I Mr. William Herbert Guthrie-Smith, of Tutira, Hawke's Bay, has died aged 79. ! Born at Helmeburgli, Scotland, in 1801, Mr. Guthrie-Smith arrivod in the Dominion in 1880. An ardent lover of Nature, lie books covered many aspects I of New Zealand life, among them being i "Birds of the Water, Wood and Waste" and "Muttonbirds and Other Birds." J Originally the Tutira station took in more than 20,000 acres, running at one [ time 41,000 sheep and lambs. After subdivision, nearly 7000 acres remained as the Tutira homestead block. Air. , (iuthrie-Sraith was a fellow of the New Zealand Institute, now known as the Royal Society of New Zealand. Predeceased by his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Mrs. J. A. Absolom, of Kissington, Hawke's Bay.
