"IN THE CART."

JOCKEY LOOKS BACK. j A TAUMARUXUI EPISODE. It is not only the lot of the punter to be "in the cart."' B. H. Morris, in responding to the toast to jockeys at the evening given by the president oi" the Manawatu Raedng Club, .Air. L. H. C'ollinson, relafed liow he was once in the cart after a race meeting. It was at one of the former Taumarunui meetings, the only one he ever attended. The horses there were very rough riding. His first two mounts ran last. Then someone came along and asked him to ride, another horse he had never heard of. He said he doubted if he could get such a house away, tmt the person in charge said it didn't matter if the horse was left or went off the wrong way. After the race was over he could lind no one to take the horse, and after walking about with it. for some minutes he was on the point of hitching it to the palings when someone rushed up and relieved him of it. Before the final event, the late Roy Reed approached him and said he had the winning mount for him, and, though by this time he was reluctant to take it.- he did so and it won. It rained all day. After the races they could find no conveyance whatever into town. He and Roy Reed decided to tramp through the rain, but when they reached the bridge a anan in a cart caught them and offered them a lift. So they finished that eventful day "in the cart."
