Leander is >aid to have swum across a, Helle,i P on t. between Sestcw and Abvdos, about one mile; and Lord Byron, and Lieut. Ekenhead, di<l the same, May 3, 1810. On August 24, 18/2, Mr. Johnson, styled the "hero of London Bridge," and swimming champion of the world, attempted to swim from Dover to Calais, 19 miles, but was prevented by cold. He was said to have swum seven miles in about 65 minutes
