ONEHUNGA 'SUNSHINE'

BIG RELIEF FUND GRANTS.

'UNEMPLOYMENT INDUSTRY."

(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.)

ELLINGTON, this day

Declaring that he was astounded at the figures he found in the Onehunga borough balance-sheet, Mr. W. S. Goosman (National, Waikato), told the House of Representatives last night that the Labour memlier for Oamaru (Mr. A.H. Xordmeyer) promised at a by-election there that Labour would bring sunshine into Onehunga. He would tell the House what sort of sunshine had gone to that borough. Its total rate recipts, excluding water, were £31.734 and he 'was astounded to find that the borough also received relief funds amounting to £•>7,14(1. It was astonishing.

Mr. A. G. Osborne (Government, Onehunga) : Was that for a good member and a good council ?

Mr. Goosman: I don't know whether it is a Labour council or typical of what

is happening, but I have no hesitation in saying that it is reprehensible. Onehunga has a population of 11,082 and while the rates were £2 17/fi per head, relief was £5 3/6.

Mr. W. A. Bodkin (National, Central Otago) : Unemployment is the biggest industry in the town.

Mr. <ioosman suggested that there was probably sustenance also. The balance-sheet showed that the council spent little on supplies, without which useful work was impossible. Therefore the big proportion of this money must have been wasted. It was nothing else but an excuse to pay wages. '
