WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.

Waitoa.—The August meeting of the Waitoa Women's Institute was presided over bv the president. Mrs. H. Kerr. Mrs. Harden gave a demonstration on quilting. A roll call of riddles passed an enjoyable half hour. The glee club members sang two songs. A competition for the best made Cornish pasty was won by Mrs. Wood, with Mrs. Coiilson second and Mrs. A E. Blackwell third. The thought for the month was "Don't be a crank —lie a self-starter."

Hobsonville.—At the August meeting a demonstration ,of leather work was given by Mrs. Blake. A competition for a butter sponge sandwich was won by Mrs. Geo. Thompson, with Mrs. W. Ockleston second. Another for a vase of spring flowers resulted in Miss Morrison gaining first and Mrs. Geo. Thompson second.

Waiuku. —Mrs. W. M. Campbell welcomed a large gathering of members and friends at the August meeting. Members of Otaua Women's Institute were guests of honour. The month's thought and entertainment, musical and dramatic, were given by the junior circle. The golden thread was a message on the sanctity of home life. A travel talk, "Along the Nile," was given by the Rev. 'Hart. Farewell gifts of flowers and best wishes were given to Mrs. S. Neil, a foundation member and past president, and to Mrs. W. M. Campbell, president, both of whom are leaving the district. Receiving hostesses were Mesdames Jolly and R. Barriball. Mrs. Arvidson, Mrs. McNamara and Miss Oldfield were in charge of the trading stall.
