WATERSIDE WORKERS.

NETHERLANDS SYSTEM,

A comparison between the manner in which the loading and unloading of ships was performed by our waterside workers as against the natives of the Netherlands East Indies was drawn by Mrs. Bauer in a talk given to the New Women's Club. No 40 hour week is enjoyed by the natives of Java, nor have they the benefit of electric cranes, or any modern equipment. Instead they work from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. for a wage of 30 cents a day. "They are a most charming people," said Mrs. Bauer, "and their diet consists chiefly of yams."

After an absence of some years, the speaker said she had been particularly struck, upon revisiting the Netherlands East Indies recently, by the many big improvements made for the European population and by the palatial hotels of the most modern type which catered for the tourist.

At the conclusion of her address Mrs. Bauer described briefly a number of models and samples of native handicraft loaned by the Netherlands Government.
