MOVING UPWARDS.
BAROMETER RECOVERS. AUCKLAND ESCAPES STORM. After dropping to the lowest point ever recorded in .Auckland at two o'clock yesterday afternoon, when the reading was 28.718 in, or 972.5 millibars, the barometer commenced to move upwards, though at four o'clock yesterday afternoon the Auckland reading of 973 millibars was still the lowest in the Dominion. At 8.30 o'clock this morning- the reading at the Government meteorological office at Mechanics' Bay was 05)1.S millibars, equal to 2&.29 in, and the barometer was still rising.
Although a storm of the proportions that might liavc been expected did not reach Auckland during the night, there were strong wind* and several gusts came within the gale class of between 34 and 4(1 miles an hour, but they were not sustained. A pust of 42 miles an hour was experienced (shortly after midnight. For the -_M hours elided at 8.30 o'clock this morning there was a rainfall of only o.2Sin. It was considered that the front of the storm had passed over Auckland yesterdav afternoon, followed liy a recovery in the barometer. The normal conditions to expect in the wake of a cold front of this kind were very changeable weather, with showers and blue sky alternating and cooler temperatures.
Reports received yesterday morning from Norfolk Tsland stated that there wa« a wind of force S on the Beaufort scale, equivalent to a full gale. The motor ship port Tauranga. about 200 miles south-west of Norfolk Tsland. advised that she was experiencing a wind of force 0. or a strong gale, while the steamer Komata. 200 miles west of North f'ape, also reported a strong gale.
