SOCCER HIGHLIGHT. TEN TEAMS OPEN SEASON. THISTUB LOSE AT BLAWDrORD. Drenching rain marked the official opening of the Auckland Football Association's 1039 season on Saturday, but though attendances were affected, it did not prevent the players from displaying bright football in spite of the difficulty of controlling a slippery ball. Highlight of the day wm the win recorded at Onehunga by the newly-pro-moted Grey Lynn eleven, who registered no—4 win against the home team. Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys secured the greatest margin of the clay with a victory by 5 gonls to 1 against a weakened Thistle side. Comrades) took the honours by 4 goals to 2 at Victoria Park against Ponsonby, while at Devonport la«t season's champion aide, North Shore, drew with Y.M.C.A. Abels and Eastern Suburbs also drew on the St. Helier'g ground. Result* were:— Mount Albert !>. Thistle 1, Comrades 4, Ponsonby 2. Xorth Shore 4. Y.M.C.A. 4. Orey Lynn 6. Onehunga 4. Eastern Suburb* 3, Abels 3. A GOOD IMPRESSION. In conditions not conducive to the best nt Soccer the opening season game at Walkaraka Park. Heavy rnln In the first half and high wind In the second made conditions decidedly unpleasant. Winning the toss. Orey Lynn settled down to a slippery ground and greasy ball better than Onehunga and were soon two gonls up, a lead which they maintained until the clone of play, leading at halftime by 4 gonls to 2. In the second naif Onehunga maintained a steady pressure, but sterling defence on the part of Orey Lynn prevented them obtaining a lead, breakaways by Orey Lynn producing two goals to Onehimga's two, one from a penalty and the other by a Orey Lynn defender deflecting the ball Into his own goal In a melee following a corner.
