BRILLIANT PAGEANTRY
Celebration of Shakespeare's Birthday. THOUSANDS LINE STREETS. (Received 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, April 23. Brilliant pageantry marked Stratford-on-Avon's celebration of Shakespeare's birthday in the Diamond Jubilee Memorial Theatre. The flags of 77 nations were unfurled. Thousands of people lined the streets to watch a floral procession, and many pilgrims placed wreaths on the bard's tomb. Mr. J. B. Priestley, speaking at a commemoration luncheon, deplored the present state of theatrical art, which he attributed to heavy taxation and lack of interest on the part of newspapers.
