That any scheme launched by the r.'overnrnent should be financed by the State was the contention of Mr. R. A. Aldridge at last night's meeting of the Devonport Borough Council when an invitation to contribute a »um not exceeding £!i towards the expense* of the metropolitan committee responsible for the organisation of Fitnes» Week was received. "To launch euch a echeme with a blare of trumpets and then ask local bodies to contribute ia something of an anomaly," he said, in pointing out that thrtwgh it was understood that any surplus would be returned on a pro rata basifl, there was nothing said about what would happen in the event of a defldttMjr. It might be in that case that another levy would be imposed. He added that he understood that the contributions by local bodies were only for the secretarial expenses ot the committal and not to cover the actual cost of organising Fitness Week. Oα Mr. Aldridge'* motion it was decided to contribute £3 3/.
