IMPORTED V. LOCAL FOODS.
"Consumer's" contention that New Zealand can produce untold quantities of fruit and vegetables should not pass unchallenged. It is a well-known fact that canned fruits and vegetables have not and cannot be produced in sufficient quantities, or at prices which the ordinary working class can afford. Let me compare one line alone, in which New Zealand manufacturers are protected by 25 per cent exchange, plus 2d per lb duty" In spite of such protection the local manufacturers can produce less than one-third of New Zealand's requirements, and the local product sells at Id per tin more than the imported. Surely there is something wrong with "Consumer's" statement that the few luxury lines which we have to import have been beyond the purse of the ordinary working class. It seems that the New Zealand product should come under this category. UNBIASED.
