ENCOURAGE THE TOUTH,
People in New Zealand suffered from an inferiority complex, stated the president of the Auckland Society of Arts. Mr. Richard O. dross, speaking last night at tho opening of the society's summer exhibition in the Victoria Arcade. There was a large attendance, and Miss Jean Fari|uhar, winner of the society's travelling ( arnegie scholarship, was guest of honour.
Mr. Gross said he did not mean to infer that Dominion art was equal to or superior to that of other countries, but the people of this country did contribute to any disparity which might exist by adopting a defeatist attitude towards the work of their own art ists.
He ap]>ealed to New Zealauders to do more to encourage the Dominion's younger artists by buying their pictures and giving them commissions to execute work. It nhould not be necessary to await the birth, life and death of some genius—some New Zealand Rembrandt, or Botticelli—before buying a work of art.
The president said that all would wish tlie guest of honour every success in her work aboard. He announced the further award of a scholarship from the Associated Art Society of New Zealand of £2.~) a year. This was independent of the Auckland Society's scholarship.
The exhibition will be open until December 10.
