An improved position in regard to the collection of city rates .wag reported upon by the city treasurer, Mr. T. W. M. Ash by, at a meeting of the City Council last evening. He stated that the amount collected to the end of last month was £70,163, compared with £83,487 for the same period last year. Arrears amounted to £17,020, compared with £11,344 for the same period of last year, and arrears for previous years £8783, compared with £11,100. For water meter charges £22,901 had been collected, compared with £21,103 to the end of August laat yeax.
CITY WORKS.
RECENT DISMISSAL OF MEN. In connection with the recent dismissal of men from city works, the city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, reported to the Auckland City Council last evening that there were at present 017 men employed on special works for which a subsidy was paid by the Uovernment. The men were employed on special works for which a subsidy was obtained to relieve unemployment. Oil completion of the particular works men had to l>e dismissed. It was difficult to predict the duration of the remaining works.
