COUNCIL DECISIONS.

AFFAIRS OF THE CITY.

Various decisions were made at tinmeeting of the Auckland City Council last evening. The deputy Mayor, Mr. J. A. C. Alium, presided.

Mayor Recuperating.—The Mayor. Sir Ernest Davis, sent a letter to say that he was recuperating from indisposition, and thanking the councillors for their kind wishes.

Taxi Fares. —On the recommendation of the superintendent of traffic, Mr. C. Bland, it was decided to amend by-law 22 by including the following provision:

"In respect of any journey which is partly or wholly outside the inner area, the fare shall not lie less than at the rate of fid a mile for the whole distance traversed outside the inner area, including going to and returning from the hiring and. 12) when the hirer returns in the vehicle by tlie same or similar route. no charge shall bo made for the return journey as far as the boundary of the inner area and, (3) where the driver is required to stop or wait in the course of a journey for a period less than five minutes, the distance actually traversed shall be deemed to be increased by one-fifth mile for every minute of stoppage or waiting recorded on the taxi-meter."

Raising of Loan.—The town clerk. Mr. J. Melling, was instructed to prepare tlu necessary special orders for the raising of a loan of £K.">oo. to be known as the Municipal Golf Links (Western Springs) Loan, sanction for which hhs been received from the Local Government Loans Board. The loan is in terms of the Physical Welfare and Recreation Act. 1037.

Safe-Bathing.—The health committee reported that bacteriological examiiiif tion of samples of water from the menf tepid swimming bath showed that the water was safe for bathing purposes from the public health point of view.

Armistice Day. — Permission was gianted to the Auckland Returned Soldiers' Association to hold a ceremony at the Cenotaph on the morning of Armistice Day. and it was decided to present the new flags as in past years.

Cemetery Charges.—lt was decided that at Waikumete Cemetery the additional burial fee of 10/ and additional cremation fee of 10/, payable ou Sundays and public holidays, should alrio be payable on Saturdays, and that the by-laws be amended accordingly.

Domain Tennis Courts. —A request from the Auckland Tennis Association that the tennis courts at the Auckland Domain should be resurfaced was declined, as the work was estimated to co«t £820 and no finance was available.

Traffic Revenue. —The superintenden'. of traffic, Mr. C. Bland, reported that the traffic revenue for the year to date was £27,230. an increase of £2882 on the corresponding j»eriod of last year.

Replacement of Books.- —A recommendation was adopted from the finance committee to allocate £300 for the replacement of books in the fiction department at the library, and £2t)o for the purchase of books for the reference department. The total amount was formerly, placed on the estimates for a staff room.

Municipal Band.—Decision not to receive a deputation to discuss the municipal band was made in reply to advice that a public meeting had been held to discuss the councils previous decision, and that a committee had been set up to wrfit on the council. It was stated that any >epresentationa made would be considered by a special subcommittee which has been set up to make a report.
