DONATIONS MADE.
TETTT GUINEAS TO W.E.A.
Donations made at a meeting of the City Council last evening included £52 10/ to the Workers' Educational Association, £5 6/ to the Territorial Association and £5 towards the cost of renovation of the shelter at St. Paul's Church.
Mr. A. St. Clair Brown considered that a grant of 50 guineas to the W.E.A. was extravagantly large. Some sections of the community wanted to be nursed from the cradle to the grave. The council had no right to make large donations of the ratepayers' money. He compared it with the smallness of the grant to the Territorial Association.
Mr. J. Sayegh urged that the W.E.A should be granted £75.
Dr. R. O. McElroy pointed out that the council had a year of heavy commitments.
