BOWLING PLANS.

LARGE GATHERINGS. NEXT WEEK'S FUNCTIONS. MR. PASCOE m IRELAND. (By TRUXDLER.) Conditions for bowling were decidedly pleasant on Saturday, players congratulating themselves next day on having just miseed one t.f the worst afternoons of the season. There were no defaults at Balmoral for the special soldiers , tournament and three short rounds were played, leaving the i-st for next Saturday,'and possibly int>.. (> f tlie post-section play. A feature in Uiie reunion was the presence of a link from Moninsville. and their nkip, Mr. MaeLean, announced the intention of his party to make another long trip next week-end, even though they could not possibly win, for they looked forward to conversing with another lot of their former comrades in arms. The same sentiment was expressed by Mr J W Kendall, president of the Auckland K.&.A., in replying to the welcome from the club president, Mr. K. W. Batey, and he staye<l there all the afternoon to have a chat with old friends, although he is not a bowler.

Apparently there will be just as large a liatherinsr at Mount Albert ncx» Saturday tor the annual match between the business men of Queen Street ami KaraiiKahapo Road. Last year it was a 13-rink match and the latter won by 8 rinks to 7, after winning for the first time the previous year. Ota<zo Old Boys will have a reunion at Balmoral a week later. October 1. and several clubs are officially opening the summer eeason the same day. Trophies Retained. For the second time this season the whole four sets of intci-wlub challenge trophies were successfully detended by the holders last Saturday, whereas thie happened only once last winter, and not at all during the previous season. The Grey Lynn challengers for the Kdwin Stars found themselves one man short when they arrived at Onehunga, but the match committee gave them the president of the club to rill the breach, so they were quite satisfied. Still more so were they pleased when they lifted five in the riret head, and with four heads played they were 7 to 2. Replying with a four and .several singles, the holders leached 11 to I) on the tenth head, and the next head settled the match. Livingstone lay four when the skips went to the mat, and he drew a fifth. Curtis beat them all with a splendid draw, just jack high, two or three inches away. Livingstone pressed it out with one of those easy rune that have given him so many wius. his bowl staying in the count for six. and "Curtis could I wive only or.e. Oneliunga not need to trouble any more, except to keep down the score: T. C. Turnbull. X. L. Norman, H. A. KohertMOU, F. Livingstone (Onehunga). holder* 23, v. H. Gebbie, W. Kennedy. M. W. Kerns, W. Curtis (Grey Lynn), challengers 17.

The next on the list is A. I. Clarke (Auckland), followed by V. W. Oates (Ponsonby) and G. E. Kent (Carlton).

A most unusual result was seen in the Deninon Pins, the challengers striking the length at once and tarrying the score to eight all. Then everything went wrong, und they never scored again, the holders coming away with a run of 2. 1, 5. 1, 4, to win in the end with a heavy margin: F. Baker, W. G. Gale. R. McMaster, A. Hitchen (Stanley), holders 26. v. VV. Aylett. C. Keller, J. Savin, W. England (Rawhiti). challengers 8. The next challengers are T. G. Harriman. H. Mitchell, T. Pilkington, A. Moon (Te Papapa). A Close Shave. The eoldiere tied at 16-all on t!ie eighteenth head for the Diggers' Badges, and the stage wi'iiwd set for a great tinkrh, especially viien the visitors had proved equal to notching a five in the early stages. However, St. Helier's secured four and three on the next two heade, and as a tie ie useless to challengers, and they regarded eight impossible,. they sliook hands without playing the 'last head: F. S. Dean, S. McMuhon, J. Tyndall, R. Dawson (St. Helier's). holders, 23. v. M. 'J'. McGregor. K. G. Martin, R. Xicholk, T. H. Mitchell (Mangere), challengers. 16. The next challenger is C. M. Culpin (Rawhiti), and this may be the last match for the eeason-

Two shot* settled the destiny of the Jordan Pins, although the card showed a big margin at the end: W. B. Stephens. J. R. Harlock. K. J. Gatland, L. Bray (Onehunga). holders. 28. v. T. G. Harrijnan, H.' Mitchell, A. Moon, T. Pilkington (Te Papapa), challenger*, 15. In the first of the two vital heade Te Papapa were lying two seconds, and Pilkington drove at the shot bowl, got a wick off hie ehort second to divert it to the other, and knocked it out also, to find/ himself six down! In the other he used \h is last bowl to drive the jack into the ditch for five. He hit it riplit enough, but it hit a back bowl and returned to give hi* opponent three. The next challenger ie J. 6. Martin (Ellerslie). A new competition was instituted at Carlton recently for a trophy presented by a visitor (Mr. Hadwin). It was decided to work it in singlets 21 heads, the bowls to ceuut 4, 3, 2, 1, in that order, according to -which were neareet the jack. For this novelty a field of 64 was secured, eo that it could run out evenly in six rounds, with no byes. The winner was Alf. Julian, who ecores were 123 to 87, 128 to 82. 114 to 96, 112 to 98, 107 to 103, and 112 to 98. Not bad for a "young fellow"' who will be 79 next month! It hae often been revealed that the bowlers of Xew Zealand know very little about the bowlors of Great Britain and«i Ireland, and probably the latter know still lefw about ue. Consequently it ie really good news to learn that Mr. Jamee Pascoe. who represented the Dominion at the recent annual meeting of the International Bowling Board, held in Ireland thie year, arranged at the meeting that the four bowling centres which are the headquarters of the Xew Zealand Bowline Association in turn are to lie immediately supplied with copies of the revised international laws of the game, and also each year copies of their year books. No doubt the Xew Zealand Bowling Council will be delighted to reciprocate, especially in view of the projected visit to Britain next year. A bowler of world-wide renown. Mr. Bert Bailey is expected in Auckland next month, just in time to see some of the dub openings, and to appreciate the hospitality of the city bowlers for a few weeks. Although very few know him ae a bowler lie enjoys great repute as "Dad" in "On Our Selection." so those who know him in that capacity will <be specially glad to see how he handles a bowl.
