ANNUAL ATTEMPT?
Climber's Suggestion for
Everest Bids.
FAVOURABLE SEASON. (Received 1.30 p.m.) LOXDOX, July 3. A succession of yearly expeditions to Mount Everest is wanted, writes Mr. W. H. Tilman, leader of the British expedition, from Kongbuk base camp, in a copyright letter to "The Times." summing up the results of the latest attempt.
He points out that there was seemingly no lull in 15C58 between winter winds and the first heavy snowfall owing to the early monsoon, adding that last year they were told the situation was exceptionally favourable.
"Moreover," he writes, "we saw in 1»3"» a mountain that could be climbed to the end of June. Xow we know that a small expedition can do what is necessary. Such a succession of attempts has become a possibility. I believe that probably a smaller party than the present should come out every May. A favourable season will occur sooner or later and we have mountaineers capable of taking advantage of that."
