PANDEMONIUM.
COWS ATTACK. BYSTANDERS SCATTER MAN DIVES INTO RUBBISH. MANY A NARROW ESCAPE. (By Telejrraph.—Own Correspondent.) NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. Pandemonium was caused by cows which broke loose at Fitzroy, and before the animals were finally herded into a nearby paddock drovers, motorists, tramwaymen, residents and school children had a very lively time. The cattle had arrived at the Smart Road station from Masterton for a Mangorei fanner. As they turned the corner in the main road at Fitzroy school children, in spite of warnings from the drover, gathered round the drover. One boy, leaning on his bicycle, refused to shift, and a cow charged the cycle and damaged the front wheel. Cars would not stop for the cattle, so another cow charged a vehicle, leaving a heavy dent in the radiator. The excited cries of the children were too much for the cattle, and they went into action, splitting up into two attacking parties. The children scattered and one cow made for a coal and wood merchant's yard, which it refused to leave. In a few seconds the merchant sprinted on to the street with the cow close on his heels. % Reinforcements. Another man escaped by diving headlong into a heap of rubbish in his yard. The appearance of trams in Devon Street excited the cattle still more. The objects of attacks this time 'were gardens and side streets, and any person who happened to be handy. Two more drovers arrived on the scene, but even with reinforcements it was impossible to drive the cattle on to the stock route. Finally the herd was collected from nearby properties and front gardens, and left in the paddock to regain composure.
