RAILWAY GUARD. THORNDON FATALITY. TRUCKS PASS OVER BODY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Mr. Edward Furness, a railway guard, aged 39, of 3>, Thorndon Quay, was killed outright in the Thorndon railway yards about 0.25 o'clock this morning. Mr. Furness is an ex-Royal Navy man whose wife lives in England. He served during the war as a leading telegraphist. He was on a stock train bound for Petone. It was waiting for the signal to proceed, and as customary the fireman waited for the guard to give the signal to go after the lights. had changed. The fireman saw Mr. Furness give tlie signal and the train moved off. That was the last seen of him alive. The van was in about the middle of a line of trucks. The driver of another locomotive ill the yard noticed that one of the rear trucks was derailed, and he blew three or four blasts on his whistle. The stovk train stopped, and the driver and lireman went (»ck for the guard. Tliey could not find hinf in the cab, and his body was discovered behind the train, the last 10 trucks apparently having ;>assed over it.
