"STOP, THIEF!"
AUTOMATIC SIGNAL
' SLOT-BOX ALARM DEVICE. An automatic device which flashes a signal to the telephone exchange when there is interference with .a coin-in-the-slot telephone has greatly assisted the Auckland police in the detection .of I offenders. All coin-in-the-slot telephones, except those in private business premises, are connected with the system, and when a raid is made on. any of them an attendant in the exchange immediately picks up the signal. By a simple test the attendant can quickly ascertain the source of the alarm. The police are notified immediately, and the sphere of operations of the raider is. at once narrowed. In a recent case this alai'm system proved most helpful.
Even though the thief may decamp wliilo the alarm is being flashed, it is unlikely that ho will he able to smash a second box in the locality, since the polico night patrol car will tie searching the area and near-by coin-in-the-slot telephones will be under surveillance.
