GRAMMAR BACKS FAIL.
The flat-footed stnnre of the Grammar inside backs spelled defeat for their team from the opening stages of the main game at Eden Park on Saturday, when Ponsonby. last year's champions, pulled themselves tip to second place on the ladder by beating Grammar by 5 points to nil. With fast and capable three-quarters waiting outside. Wagst-affe and Turner continually ran into the Ponsonby defence, passed poorly and generally spoiled the Grammar hack movements. Ponsonby played soundly, without reaching any heights. Territorially, the game was Grammar's from the first! Both packs played gowl. hard, football, with Lockington, Don and the Brown brothers shining for Grammar, and Johnson, F. Solomon, Knight and Carson standing out for Ponsonby. l'onsonhy's sole try was scored by Hudson, who prayed splendidly at centre. Carson converted. A sound goaikicker would have been an asset to Grammar.
