(Received 2 p.m.) SHANGHAI, April 27. Japanese from launches boarded the British steamer Tung Wo, owned by the Indo-China Steam Navigation Co., Ltd., at the mouth of the Yangtse River. They bayoneted Chinese members of the erew and then escorted the vessel to the Japanese base at Tsungming Island, where thev searched her from top to bottom.
The owners declare the ship was carrying ordinary caigo. but the Japanese allege that arms were being carried. c
The Tung Wo was later released, however. The decks of H.M.S. Cricket, which was sailing to investigate the incident, had been cleared for action, and her commander had been ordered to recover the Tung Wo forcefully, when the Japanese capitulation was announced
The Japanese had ordered an immediate naval inquiry and were hoping for a settlement within 24 hours.
It was earlier stated that the Japanese had given an assurance that they would release the Tung Wo before night, and that the sailing of the Cricket was' liikely to be cancelled.
