SAUCE IS TOO SAUCY!
Difficulties in Broadcasting of
Arabic Songs.
INTENTIONS OF THE 8.8.C
LONDON, January 5,
The second Arabic programme from Britain included English folk songs and orchestral pieces. However, the Arabs do not appreciate Western music, which they describe as idiotic. Accordingly, the British Broadcasting Corporation is discussing plans for bringing to London well-known Egyptian artists, whose singing is regarded as fascinating, also for broadcasting Arabic songs and music from records.
The "Daily Telegraph" says a British difficulty is that Arabic songs often freely express sentiments which would shock British taste, although they are in accordance with classical tradition, as Burton's translation of the "Arabian Nights" proves. Therefore, what is sauce for the Bari is too saucy for Broadcasting House.
