POACHED TROUT.
THREE MAORIS FINED £4.
(From Our Correspondent.)
TAUPO, Tuesday. For taking trout during the closed season at the Waitetoko Stream, Tokaanu, three Maoris, Kalii Jlurae, Timi Maniapopo and Duncan Wall, were each lined £4 at the Police Court in Tauno to-day. Messrs. K. H. Ward and R. F. ilutchms, .T.l'.'s, were on the Roneh.
Mr. A. kean, conservator of fish and game, Rotorua, who prosecuted, remarked that there was no excuse for Maoris now to poach during the closed season, as they were well paid, and were not driven to catching fisli for food only. He asked that a heavy penalty be imposed.
