AMERICAN VISITOR.
Passing through Auckland on the Monterey yesterday was Dr. Emma Perry Carr, of Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Massachusetts. She is mi a holiday trip to Melbourne to visit her sister, who is general secretary of the Y.W.C.A. there. Dr. Carr is a doctor of philosophy at one of the half-dozen large colleges for women. The colleges in the United States, she suid, were not affiliated with the universities, but conferred their own degrees. They were endowed and maintained through philanthrophy. The men's colleges of Harvard and Yale were not open to women whose own colleges were run on similar lines. Dr. Carr is returning early in January.
